Monthly Analysis → Spending Review → Savings

Understand current-month spending, check patterns before changing a budget, and update your savings goal only after you actually set money aside.

At a glance

Use Analysis & Savings to understand the income and expenses recorded this month, compare spending with the previous month, correct unclear transactions and choose one or two areas worth reviewing. In Budgets & Goals, set a practical monthly limit and track money you have actually set aside. TidyOne AI can suggest ideas from your recorded data, but it cannot cancel subscriptions, transfer funds or guarantee savings.

Why a monthly review tells you more than a list of purchases

At the end of a month, you might glance at your bank account, decide you spent too much and promise to buy less next month. A balance alone cannot tell you which expenses were essential, which purchases recur, whether transactions in different currencies have been mixed or whether something was left out. A useful monthly review asks more specific questions: what changed, why did it change, and what might you adjust without giving up something important?

TidyOne Personal puts income, expenses, receipts, budgets and savings goals in one workspace. Analysis & Savings gives you an overview of the current month, with a simple insight that may compare it with the previous month. It is not a live feed of every bank account you own. The conclusions are only as complete as the transactions and categories you have saved.

Before you begin: make your data comparable

Switch to the Personal workspace. Collect the relevant receipts and invoices, card payments and any cash spending you want to track. If you scanned a receipt and confirmed its AI review, check My Money / Transactions to make sure you did not already enter that purchase manually. A duplicate can turn an ordinary category into an apparently serious spending problem.

Use consistent category names. For instance, “Groceries” and “Food” may be treated as different categories in your entries. A budget configured for one category does not automatically include a different name. Before comparing two months, consider whether you recorded roughly the same proportion of spending in each one. A complete September cannot meaningfully be compared with an August for which half the receipts are missing.

Your analysis is not a bank statement. The difference between recorded income and expenses is not necessarily your available bank balance. Cash, transfers, pending payments or activity in another account may be missing. Verify your actual balances and upcoming obligations before deciding how much to save.

Step 1 — Open Analysis & Savings and read the three totals

From your Personal navigation, open Analysis & Savings. The first row shows Expenses this month, Income this month and the Difference. These figures are calculated from saved transactions dated in the current calendar month and belonging to the active workspace. The current version of this page does not provide a date picker for selecting an older month or a custom range.

Read the numbers as a snapshot of what you have entered so far, not a verdict about the whole month. On the twelfth day, for example, you may already have paid rent and utilities while your next salary payment has not arrived. Extrapolating from a partial month can be misleading. For a complete assessment, return after recording the final transactions for that period.

Step 2 — Find significant categories without mixing currencies

The Where your money goes section shows up to six category–currency combinations with recorded expenses. Each card includes the amount and that category's share of expenses in the same currency. If you use only RON, you can quickly see how much of your spending relates to groceries, transport or subscriptions. A large category is not automatically wasteful: rent, necessary medication and essential services can dominate the picture without being suitable cuts.

If you use both RON and EUR, examine the two currencies separately. TidyOne does not convert these amounts automatically using an exchange rate. The current page also sorts category cards by their recorded numerical values; this means a 300 RON card appearing above a 100 EUR card is not a valid economic comparison. Compare amounts and percentages within the same currency before drawing conclusions.

Step 3 — Interpret the monthly insight, not just the percentage

Under the category cards, TidyOne Insight provides a short observation. Where suitable data exists in one currency, it compares this month's expenses with the previous month and may point out the largest category. If you have not recorded expenses in the previous month, the percentage comparison is unavailable. When the current month contains multiple currencies, the page warns you to keep totals separate instead of presenting a misleading combined change.

Look for the reason behind a difference. Higher spending could reflect an annual insurance payment, an unexpected repair or a purchase postponed from last month. Lower spending might simply mean missing receipts. Check unusual events and the completeness of your records first; only then decide whether a repeated habit is worth changing. A single exceptional month is not a reliable measure of your long-term spending.

Step 4 — Resolve three common errors before cutting a budget

The same purchase was entered twice

You manually entered a payment in My Money and later uploaded its receipt, confirming another financial entry during AI review. Compare the dates, merchant, amounts and supporting document. Keep the receipt in your archive, but delete or correct a duplicated transaction only once you are certain which entry represents the real purchase.

The category is inaccurate

A supermarket receipt can contain groceries, cleaning supplies and household items. Assigning the entire receipt to groceries may inflate that category. Review the AI proposal and split the lines appropriately when the analysis workflow supports it. Do not invent item details that the receipt does not show. Consistent categorization matters more than having a long list of narrowly defined categories.

One month is missing transactions

If you entered every purchase this month but only a few last month, the change percentage is unreliable. Treat the incomplete month as a partial reference and use the current one to test a more consistent tracking habit. Do not report a saving just because a category contains fewer transactions than a period for which you did not keep complete records.

Step 5 — Separate essentials from spending you can realistically review

Before looking for reductions, create three simple groups. The first covers essential needs and obligations: housing, utilities, necessary food, required travel, healthcare and repayments due soon. The second contains variable purchases where frequency or shopping methods might be adjustable. The third contains optional services or purchases you barely use. TidyOne's transaction categories describe what a payment was for; they cannot decide which group it belongs to in your specific household.

Start with measurable questions: are you paying for two subscriptions nobody uses? Do several convenience purchases add meaningful fees over a month? Would adjusting their timing actually lower costs? This guide is not an invitation to cut basic nutrition, healthcare, children's needs or other essential expenses for the sake of an attractive dashboard. Some months offer no sensible spending reductions. In that case, a successful review may mean more predictable payment planning, not forced savings.

Step 6 — Ask TidyOne AI for a second perspective

Open TidyOne AI in Personal. You can select quick actions currently labelled “Luna asta vs luna trecută” (this month versus last month), “Bugete” (budgets) and “Unde economisesc?” (where can I save?). These quick-action labels have not yet been fully localized to English. The assistant receives a summary of available financial records, budgets and goals, and may suggest a few opportunities. It does not automatically read all your bank statements or know about payments you have not entered. Check its numbers against your actual transactions rather than treating the answer as verified financial advice.

For more relevant suggestions, use Profil AI → Editează profilul (AI Profile → Edit profile) and optionally enter your goal, target, timeframe, areas of concern and, particularly, what you do not want to reduce. This lets you protect the essential expenses that matter to your household. A useful question is: “Using only the transactions I have recorded, identify three recurring charges I should review, show the exact RON amounts and tell me what data is missing. Do not recommend cutting essential food or healthcare.”

What AI can and cannot do.It can explain patterns and propose actions from the supplied information. It cannot confirm on its own whether a subscription is still active, cancel that subscription, transfer money or promise that estimated reductions will become real savings. Check contracts and cancellation terms with the provider before taking action.

Step 7 — Build or adjust one meaningful monthly budget

Go to Budgets & Goals → Budgets and select + Budget for the category where you want to test your new habit. Enter a descriptive name, the exact category used by your transactions, the monthly limit and the currency. If a relevant budget already exists, use Edit to adjust it. A useful limit reflects genuine needs rather than being so restrictive that ordinary purchases always look like failures. Base it on a reasonably complete month whenever possible.

In the current implementation, Personal budgets are monthly and compare recorded expenses that match the budget's category and currency. If the category name does not match, a budget may show zero spent even though relevant payments exist under another category. Do not delete transactions to make the progress bar look correct; fix the category or budget setup. The app monitors recorded spending but cannot block a card purchase when you reach a budget limit.

Worked example: RON 264 of possible reductions, not automatic savings

Imagine you recorded RON 6,000 in income during a completed month. Essential fixed expenses total RON 2,650, essential variable costs RON 1,650 and optional spending RON 950. Recorded spending is therefore RON 5,250, and the simple income-minus-expenses difference is RON 750. That difference is not automatically money saved or proof that exactly RON 750 remains available in your bank accounts.

Illustrative example: optional costs this person chooses to review
Verified observationRecorded costPossible actionPotential monthly reduction
Two unused subscriptionsRON 35 + RON 29Cancel after checking the termsRON 64
Six orders with a separate delivery charge6 × RON 50 for delivery onlyAvoid four delivery charges, if practicalRON 200
Illustrative total, only if both changes actually happenRON 264

The example assumes you can avoid those charges without creating new costs and that cancellation is allowed. If delivery replaces an expensive journey or a subscription is valuable to another household member, the actual reduction might be lower or zero. Review the next month's transactions rather than adding RON 264 to a savings goal on the strength of a plan alone.

Recorded incomeRON 6,000
Recorded expensesRON 5,250

Step 8 — Move real money before updating your savings goal

Once you have checked your available balance and upcoming obligations, decide how much you can genuinely set aside in a separate account or designated reserve. In Budgets & Goals → Savings Goals, create or open a target such as a RON 5,000 emergency fund. Use + Savings only after actually setting the money aside. The button updates the progress stored in TidyOne; it does not move money at your bank and does not automatically create a financial transaction.

If your goal already shows RON 1,200 saved and you really transfer another RON 250, the correct progress is RON 1,450, with RON 3,550 remaining to reach RON 5,000. Do not add the entire RON 750 monthly difference if some of that money is needed for upcoming bills. Equally, do not confuse the hypothetical RON 264 reduction with the real RON 250 transfer in this worked example. Keeping those three figures separate gives you a more trustworthy plan.

Your 15-minute end-of-month routine

1Check that you have recorded the income, purchases and cash spending you intend to track.
2Look for duplicate receipt imports and incorrectly categorized transactions.
3Open Analysis & Savings, review each currency separately and choose no more than two categories to examine.
4Explain large changes from last month: annual bills, repairs, holidays or incomplete data.
5Review one subscription or recurring optional charge; do not cut essentials just to improve a percentage.
6Set a realistic category budget using the same category and currency as your expense records.
7Check your actual bank and cash balances against upcoming obligations.
8Update your goal only for money genuinely saved; then review the results of your change next month.

Product limits, privacy and realistic expectations

Analysis & Savings calculates straightforward indicators from transaction records. TidyOne AI is a separate conversational assistant whose usage limits depend on your plan. Its answers can be incomplete when receipts are missing, previous-month data is insufficient or category labels are inconsistent. You do not have to share personal financial details in the optional AI profile if you do not want the assistant to use them. An AI suggestion is not regulated financial advice.

This tutorial provides an organizational method, not a promise that everyone can save the same amount. When income barely covers essential expenses, the most useful outcome may be a more reliable record of upcoming bills rather than immediate savings. Real savings are money genuinely available and reserved for a purpose, not merely a positive number displayed by the app.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose an earlier month in Analysis & Savings?

Not in the current interface for this page. It shows the current month and, where suitable data exists, an insight comparing expenses with the previous month. You can review older transactions in your financial records, but the Analysis page itself does not offer a custom-range filter.

What is my largest spending category?

Check the category cards, but interpret each figure in its own currency and only after entering your relevant spending. The largest category is not necessarily the one you should reduce.

Does TidyOne automatically find every subscription?

AI can point to patterns in the records you have saved. It cannot be assumed to identify every subscription or know whether you already cancelled one. Check your service agreements, emails and providers directly.

Can I automatically save the monthly income–expense difference?

No. The + Savings control updates recorded goal progress; it does not transfer funds. Check your real balance and move or reserve money before updating the goal.

How should I budget if I pay in two currencies?

Keep the budget and its matching expense records in the same currency, or review different currency budgets separately. The current calculation does not automatically convert them.

Do I need TidyOne AI to perform a monthly review?

No. The Analysis totals and budget progress can be reviewed without starting an AI conversation. AI Coach is optional and useful for more specific follow-up questions.

Test one change next month.

Record your spending consistently, review one category and set a budget that respects your essentials. Update your goal only when you have genuinely set money aside.
